A full and dynamic programme for Joen Yö - A Night by the River

Joen Yö - A Night by the River, a traditional free cultural event for the whole family will be held on 23.8. around the market square, Rantapuisto park and Ilosaari.  Performers on the market square stage include the Joensuu City Orchestra and the groups Kvartsi, Rajatapaus and Saimaa. Why not combine the music with a visit to the Beer and Wine Festival and sample the products of various breweries and wineries?

During A Night by the River, there is free entrance to museums, which are participating with special programmes. The North Karelian Museum Hilma in Koskikatu 5 is staging an exhibition titled "Excuse me, are you a popstar?" with photos by Stefan de Batselier portraying pop and rock icons from the 1990s. The photographer will present the exhibition in English at 8 pm. The museum is located in Koskikatu 5.

The Onni Art Museum in Kirkkokatu 23 invites you to watch and join in dance events, and to hear performances by students of the Conservatory and other musicians. The steel pan orchestra Rosteri will be playing in the Art Museum yard, and the Ahjo Art Center will host several vocal groups.

Carelicum in Koskikatu 5 is hosting a Science Day. The programme includes various science sessions and workshops for the whole family. Take part in Soundscape Walking in the city centre or enjoy your favourite poems from the Poetry Tray served up by the Friends of Poetry.

Open day in Finland's tallest wood-built apartment block

Finland's tallest wood-built apartment block has finally been completed! Come and see this student block that has aroused both perplexity and praise and enjoy the views over Joensuu from the 14th floor. The building in Penttilänkulma 2 is open for visitors from 4–6 pm.  A special attraction of the day is a light-art feature. Kari Kola will present his work of art at Ylisoutajanaukio and Mayor Kari Karjalainen will switch on the lights at 9 pm.

Pedestrians and cyclists preferred

At A Night by the River, masses of visitors will be crowding into a small area in Joensuu city centre. We therefore advise you to use public transport. But if you do come by car, leave it outside the centre. If you can, please come on foot or by bicycle. The market square section of Torikatu is closed to traffic during the event.
