Graduate School in Forest Sciences
GSForest educates doctors, who are international experts in forest sciences and forestry. Main goals of GSForest are to increase the quality, efficiency and orderliness of research training in forest sciences by intensifying supervision and mentoring of the PhD students. GSForest aims to increase collaboration between universities, research institutes and enterprises in forest sector and to promote international PhD training and research collaboration. The four-year-positions funded by the Ministry of Education promote professionalisation of the early stages of research career.
GSForest has been rated excellent, when reviewed by the Academy of Finland and Ministry of Education in 2005. Doctoral dissertations.
Promotion of equal opportunities
In GSForest, women are already well represented among the trainees, and young female candidates are equally encouraged to participate the PhD training in GSForest. In the future recruitment, this practice will be continued with an aim of having the share of women and men among PhD students approximately 50%. Active, positively motivating, interdisciplinary atmosphere in GSForest, with more female supervisors is expected to encourage women to prefer scientific research as a career.
