Ari Lehtinen, born the 12th of October 1957, received the chair in geography at the University of Joensuu in 1997, after acting as a senior lecturer at the Department of Geography in Joensuu since 1993. Before that, from the early1980s, Lehtinen worked as a researcher/lecturer of geography at the Helsinki University, where he also received his doctoral degree in 1991, followed by a docentship (in applied geography and regional planning) in 1994. The topic of the doctoral thesis was: Northern Natures. A study of the forest question emerging within the timber-line conflict in Finland (Fennia 196:1). Lehtinen's special interests are connected to socio-environmental issues, forest politics and, broadly, the practical links between academic life and civic society. In 1998-2000 he served as the head of the Geography Department in Joensuu and was thereafter involved in researching 'Greenbelt Politics and Environmental Justice` as a senior research fellow in the Academy of Finland. The Center for Advanced Studies in Oslo, financed by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, invited Lehtinen to a research project on ´Landscape, Law and Justice` for the academic year 2002-2003. Thereafter Lehtinen coordinated a research group ´Provinces, Communities, Biopolitics` (2003-2007), which was followed by a project that compares Finnish and Canadian models of 'post-paper industrial' renewal (Developing Forest Services, 2008-2011). Both projects are financed by the Academy of Finland.

Ari Lehtinen (syntynyt 12.10.1957) on pyrkinyt tutkijan- ja opettajantyössään yhdistämään akateemisen 'kirjallisen' perinteen ja yhteiskunnallisen toiminnan haasteita. Tämä yhdistelmä on ilmennyt 'välitilojen' rakentamisena akateemisen ja kansalaistyön risteyskohdissa; toimintatutkimuksena, ympäristöprojekteina, luomu-viljelytutkimuksena, julkaisu- ja toimitustöinä, metsäpoliittisissa kampanjoissa sekä asukaslähtöisessä kaupunkipolitiikassa. Lehtinen on ollut helsinkiläisten maantieteen opiskelijoiden Mantu -lehden toimitusryhmän jäsen 1980-84, Suunnittelumaantieteen yhdistyksen, myöhemmin Alue- ja ympäristötutkimuksen seuran hallitusjäsen (1980-1996, eri tehtävissä), Suomen Kartaston toimittaja ja tutkija 1980-82 (Suomen maanpinnan muodot) ja 1990 (Suunnittelu ja turvallisuus), Pohjois-Helsingin lähidemokratia -projektin toimija-tutkija 1980-84, Sisäasiainministeriön konsultti 1982-83 (Kaupunkiuudistuskampanja), Helsingin yliopiston maantieteen laitoksen tuntiopettaja ja (kurssi)assistentti 1983-91, Helsingin yliopiston ylioppilaskunnan ympäristöryhmän jäsen 1984-89, Juvan Partalan maaseudun kehittämiskeskuksen, myöhemmin luonnonmukaisen viljelyn tutkimuskeskuksen perustajajäsen ja tutkija 1984-87, toimintatutkija metsäpoliittisessa ympäristöliikkeessä, Tiedekauppa ry:n tieteellisen neuvottelukunnan ja ympäristötutkimuksen johtoryhmän jäsen 1987-89, Mikkelin lääninhallituksen tutkija 1987 (Maaseudun ekokehitysvaihtoehdot), Suomen Akatemian tutkija 1992 (Ympäristö ja demokratia -projekti), Alue ja Ympäristö -lehden päätoimittaja 1992-96, Joensuun yliopiston ja Karjalan tutkimuslaitoksen Ympäristökonfliktit -projektin (1992-94) sekä Oikeudenmukaisuus ja ympäristö -projektin (1999-2003) koordinaattori yhdessä Pertti Rannikon kanssa. Vuosina 2003-2006 Lehtinen ohjasi Provinssit, yhteisöt, biopolitiikka - tutkimusryhmää, josta täsmentyi vuosille 2008-2011 tutkimusprojekti, joka vertailee Kanadan ja Suomen metsäpoliittisia ratkaisuja nykyisessä sellu- ja peperiteollisuuden muutoksessa. Hän on myös ollut Joensuun yliopiston maantieteen laitoksen yliassistentti 1993-1996 (ympäristötutkimus ja -suunnittelu), maantieteen ja yhteiskunnallisen ympäristötutkimuksen valtakunnallisten tutkijakoulujen opettaja ja yhteyshenkilö, Joensuun yliopiston ympäristöopintojen kehittämis- ja koordinaatiotyöryhmien jäsen vuodesta 1995 lähtien sekä viimeisen 15 vuoden aikana mm. Joensuu 21 -työryhmän, Joensuun seudun ympäristöfoorumin ja Joensuu-liikkeen jäsen. Professuuria Lehtinen on hoitanut vuodesta 1997 lähtien.

´Hybrid landscapes`. The project aims at opening new settings and questions in interpreting
humanity/nature interrelations. Keywords: Northern land- and lifescapes, marginal lands, provincialism, translocalisation, timescapes, boreal geodiversity. Cooperation with Nordic landscape researchers.

´Biopolitics and environmental justice`. The research analyses the community-based conditions of environmental discrimination and the emergence of the sense of justice in different socio-spatial scales. Special attention is paid to changing modes of governing the diversity of ´land and life` in the European North.

´Politics of forests in the age of globalisation`. The project examines the ongoing multiscalar internationalisation of forest industry by analysing and comparing the profiles of the major companies. Experiences of exporting the ´Finnish model` (of forest based knowledge/development) are gathered both within European and transcontinental contexts. A spesific effort is focused on analysing the lessons from the overseas investments in a Trans-Atlantic context.

´City in the margins. Urban renewal and environmental change in a provincial town`. The project concentrates on (a) local landscape and identity formulations, (b) urban risk analyses, and (c) environmental justice questions in Joensuu, a town of 72 000 inhabitants in Eastern Finland.
