Joensuu's Friendship Cities
Joensuu has five friendship cities. In addition there are cooperative agreements, for instance, with Petrozavodsk. Joensuu is also part of Mecine the European Network of Middle-size Cities.
Friendship city since 1940, located in southeastern Sweden, about 150 km from Stockholm, population approximately 140 000.
Friendship city since 1948, located in western Iceland, population approximately 3000.
Friendship city since 1948, Norway's oldest city, located on the shore of the Oslo-fjord, population approximately 42 000.
Friendship city since 1970. In the State of Bavaria, in southern Germany, population, approximately 46 000.
Friendship city since 1970, Capital of Lithuania, population approximately 524 000.
Cooperative agreement since 1994, Russian Federation, Capital of the Karelian Republic, located on the shore of Lake Onega, population approximately 270.000
Cooperative agreements also exist with the towns of Sortavala and Suojärvi in the Karelian Republic.
Joensuu is a member of the Mecine Network, which was established in 1994 and includes a number of middle-size European cities. Other members are: Evora (Portugal), Linköping (Sweden), Ravenna (Italy), Roskilde (Denmark), Speyer (Germany), Tönsberg (Norway), Delft (The Netherlands), Chartres (France).
