Positive pedagogy in schools and day care centres

« Back
In the next four years schools and day care centres in Joensuu will introduce what is called "positive pedagogy". This approach focuses on identifying the strengths of children and communicating them. The new early childhood education and care strategy that was launched last autumn emphasises the role of an empathetic, caring adult in education. All of us have different strengths and this is the core of positive pedagogy.

Ollila day care centre was a pioneer in positive pedagogy a couple of years ago and since then the model has spread to other day care units in Joensuu. Instead of so-called "faults", the focus is on strengths, encouragement and praise. Children are praised if they put away their toys before outdoor play time. They are told that they are brave to try food unfamiliar foods for lunch. They get praise for their kindness if they help another child.

Focusing on strengths has been the object of special exercises in the day care centre. The positive teaching model covers the entire working community, and cooperation with parents both crucial and ongoing.
