Joensuu marks its 170th anniversary in November – logo revealed

« Back
Joensuu will have an important anniversary at the end of November. There will be a diverse programme of events throughout the city, especially towards the end of the year as the big day approaches. A significant feature of the celebrations will be the new logo designed for the anniversary.

The logo was inspired by the history of our city and it serves as a signifier for the commemorative events. It was designed by Outi Vornanen of Fabrik advertising agency in collaboration with city representatives and reflects the official colours of Joensuu: red, black and white. The new logo is based on the city's traditional emblem and can be integrated into the letter O of Joensuu's text logo.

– We wanted the new logo to look grand and stylish but also to diverge somewhat from the established image of the city, says Vornanen.

The city of Joensuu's foundation has traditionally been celebrated on 29.11. The programme for the anniversary is still a work in progress, but already many interesting events have been arranged: The Town Hall will hold an Open Day in November, and Kansalaisopisto evening college will give three talks about the city's history, prominent personalities and architecture. In September, an anniversary exhibition will open at the North Karelian Museum Hilma.

One of the top events of the celebrations is a family concert of cartoon film music, From Jungle to Ice Palace, on 24.11. at Joensuu Arena. The performers will include Diandra and JOY, a choir of the University of Eastern Finland.
