News about the activities of the city of Joensuu.
First bicycle street in the whole country
Finland's first bicycle street was opened in Joensuu in August. The section of three blocks in Kauppakatu between Rauhankatu and Yläsatamakatu is a good example of how all types of traffic can be accommodated on the same route. The idea of the bicycle street has been adopted well in everyday use. Cyclists have left other routes for the bicycle street and avoid pavements, while car traffic has turned out to be safe and flexible. Also, the parking arrangements have been working well and cyclists take heed of reversing cars. In addition, more space is now available for pedestrians.
The bicycle street is part of Joensuu's development plan for cycling and pedestrian traffic, which covers the period up to 2030. The plan will be carried out in steps and Joensuu's network of cycle routes will improve further in the near future. Completion is due in mid-October of pedestrian and cycle lanes between the Sirkkala bridge and Siihtala ABC along the river Pielinen and of a section from Rauhankatu to Nurmeksentie. Cyclist will then have an easy route from Siihtala ABC to the market square.
Finland's first bicycle street will be continued in summer 2018 with an extension up to Niskakatu. Joensuu's example has encouraged other cities in Finland to consider similar experiments.
